Angelina Paris Hot Chocolate Review: Is It Worth the Hype?

Angelina cafe

TLDR : Angelina’s is an experience (an expensive one, at that) worth having. But read on for my full thoughts about this time old café, as well as my personal recommendations to make this cafe trip worth it!

We’ve all heard of this Instagram-worthy cafe, the famous hot chocolate or ‘chocolat chaud’, and the deep, rich history behind century-old Angelina Paris.

And truly, when it comes to hot chocolate, few places in the world can compete with Angelina. This iconic Parisian café has been serving its legendary chocolat chaud since 1903, and it remains a must-visit destination for chocolate lovers and tourists from around the world.

But what makes Angelina’s hot chocolate so special? I’ve dined at Angelina’s in both Paris and New York, and even stepped into competitors like Carette and Les Deux Magots, amongst others.

So, is Angelina’s hot chocolate really as divine as they say it is? Is it worth the hype? Let’s find out.

History of Angelina

Angelina’s was founded in 1903 by Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer, and named after his daughter-in-law. The first location opened at Tuileries (also near the Louvre) at 226 Rue de Rivoli, and the elegant tearoom quickly became a favorite among Parisian aristocrats, writers, and artists, including Coco Chanel and Marcel Proust.

Today, it remains a symbol of French indulgence and sophistication, attracting both locals and tourists who want to experience a taste of history with their cup of hot chocolate (or, do it for the “gram”). It’s a very popular spot for Instagram influencers, alike!

Why Is the Hot Chocolate at Angelina Paris so Famous?

Angelina’s hot chocolate, officially known as ‘L’Africain’ on the menu, is famous for its intense aroma, thick, creamy texture and deep chocolate flavor. The chocolate is made from a special blend of African cocoa beans, giving it a rich and intense taste.

Unlike the thinner hot chocolates found in many cafés, this one is so thick it almost feels like drinking melted chocolate. The exact recipe is a secret, but it is known to be made with real melted chocolate instead of cocoa powder, which makes it even more indulgent.

They serve the drink in a delicate porcelain pitcher with a bowl of fresh whipped cream on the side—perfect for dipping into the hot chocolate! It balances out the flavor perfectly, making the whole experience all the more special.

HOT TIP! (pun intended)– did you know you can actually buy a container of Angelina’s hot chocolate powder to go? I always make sure to pick one up when I’m in Paris to bring back to the states with me. It’s my little piece of Parisian heaven whenever I’m back home.

How much is a cup of Paris Angelina Hot Chocolate?

The price of a cup of their famous old-fashioned hot chocolate will run you approximately $9.90 USD, or $10 if we’re rounding. This is much higher than regular hot chocolate that you could get anywhere else, but many visitors believe it is worth it for the quality and experience.

My opinion? It’s definitely worth it, but try to dine at the Angelina on Rue de Rivoli to get that true, authentic Belle Époque experience! You won’t regret it, and you’ll feel much better about the price you’re paying for 1 hot chocolate and perhaps a pastry. Expect to pay around $20 for both.

Is Angelina’s Hot Chocolate Gluten-Free?

Many people with gluten allergies want to know if Angelina’s hot chocolate is safe for them. The drink itself does not contain gluten because it is made with chocolate, milk, and cream.

However, since the café serves many pastries and desserts, there is always a small risk of cross-contamination. If you have a severe gluten allergy, it’s best to ask the staff before ordering. I have noticed that they can adapt some desserts for gluten-sensitive guests, so I’d just recommend asking!

If gluten-allergy is not a worry for you, then I recommend ordering their famous Mont Blanc, which is a delicious pastry made with chestnut cream.

While you can just order a plain butter croissant, I’m not sure it’s worth the 5€ you’ll be paying for it. (and I’m ‘Croissants and Cafes’, for gods sake!). Get the Mont Blanc. You won’t regret it.

Can You Get Angelina’s Hot Chocolate to Go?

Yes! If you do not have time to sit and enjoy the full Angelina experience, you can order the hot chocolate to go. Many locations offer takeaway cups so you can drink it while walking through Paris.

If you do not live in France, you can also buy bottled or powdered versions of their hot chocolate.

The bottled version can be heated at home for a nearly identical experience, while the powdered version is an easier option for quick preparation (and easier to get through customs, IMO!)

Where Can You Find Angelina’s Hot Chocolate?

The original Angelina Tea Room is located at 226 Rue de Rivoli in Paris, just a short walk from the Louvre. Over the years, Angelina has opened more locations in different cities, including New York, Dubai, and Tokyo. Some luxury department stores also carry Angelina products, making it possible to enjoy their hot chocolate outside of Paris.

For those who cannot visit a café, Angelina sells their hot chocolate in beautiful bottles and powder form so you can make it at home and experience the same rich taste.

So, Is Angelina’s Hot Chocolate Worth the Hype?

With so much buzz surrounding Angelina’s hot chocolate, the insane 30 minute (or longer) lines, the expansion into major metropolitan cities like New York, Dubai, and Tokyo, it’s easy to wonder: is Paris Angelina Hot Chocolate really worth it?

So I’m going to answer this in two ways.

  1. If you’re a chocolate lover who enjoys rich, almost dessert-like drinks, then Angelina’s hot chocolate is absolutely a must-try. Plus, the experience of sipping on this hot chocolate in an elegant Belle Époque setting, truly adds to the whole experience. And that’s what you’re paying for at the end of the day, right?
  2. However, if you prefer a lighter, more traditional hot chocolate, you might find it too thick or intense. In my opinion, it’s incredible and an absolute must-try.

I personally think that the true appeal of Angelina’s lies in the sheer act of sipping on a hot drink (whether hot chocolate or not) in an elegant Belle Époque setting. This truly adds to the whole experience. And that’s what you’re paying for at the end of the day, right?

PSST! Now that you’ve added Paris’ most iconic cup of hot chocolate to your list to try, why not add another Parisian favorite, ‘Choux Pastsries‘!! Odette has the best pastries in Paris, not to be missed.

Tips for the Best Angelina Experience

It’s worth noting that Angelina’s original location is very popular, so it is a good idea to arrive early to avoid long lines. They do not take reservations, and the café is busiest on weekends, so visiting on a weekday morning or early afternoon is better if you want a quieter experience.

Final Thoughts

I’ll be honest— as a coffee & café aficionado, I will say that Angelina’s hot chocolate truly is that special. Especially if it’s your first time in Paris, and you’re looking for something iconic (and very Parisian tourist) to do, you won’t be disappointed.

For me, it’s more than just a drink—it’s a little Parisian ritual. One that I can take back with me to the states and reminisce on those cozy, indulgent moments that feel like a warm hug in a cup. So if you haven’t tried it yet, please add it to your list. It’s worth every sip.
