After years of buying (and returning) ballet flats that looked perfect in photos and then destroyed my feet by hour two, I finally have a short list of the most comfortable ballet flats I actually trust.
I’ve worn every single one of these, some for a single season and some for years, walking 10k+ steps in NYC, perusing the cobblestone streets of Europe, standing through long dinner parties, and packing them into a carry-on more times than I can count. If the leather was stiff, the sole had zero give, or my heel started slipping by lunchtime, it didn’t make this list.
I also wanted this guide to be genuinely useful across different price points and occasions, not just “here are five flats I like.” So below, you’ll find my most comfortable pick, my most stylish pick, the best Mary Jane, the best budget option, and the pair I reach for every single time I travel. Let’s get into it.
The 5 Most Comfortable Ballet Flats of 2026: A Quick Guide
My most favorite pick on this list are the M. Gemi Una Flats. I can’t believe I didn’t add these pairs to my collection sooner, as they are easily the most comfortable pair of shoes I own, and I reach for them almost every single day! If you’re someone who loves the feeling of a ‘barely there ballet flat’, these are going to be the pick I recommend.
That said, there’s several other pairs of shoes at various price points ($128-$325) that are definitely worth a look! I’m excited to dive into each one and share them with you.
TLDR; Quick Guide to the Best Ballet Flats

- Best Overall Comfort: M. Gemi Una Flats
- Best Value Everyday Wear: Madewell The Greta Mary Janes
- Best for Style and Comfort: Margaux Demi Jane Flats
- Best Under $100: Madewell Greta Glove Flats
- Best for Travel/Packing in a Suitcase: Vivaia Makayla’s
1. Best Overall: M.Gemi The Una Flats

Price: $298
Materials Used: Buttery-soft nappa leather upper with a suede-lined heel back and a lightweight leather sole with rubber inserts.
Colors: Black, Chocolate, Dark Red, Light Tan, Ecru, Gunmetal, & more
Available Widths: Stretches / molds to all types of feet.
The M. Gemi Una Flats completely altered my brain chemistry of what a ballet flat is actually supposed to feel like. These flats are the most buttery, comfortable, no-break-in-time pair of shoes I’ve ever put on my feet, and I’m highly suggesting (begging?) you to get a pair for yourself and see what I mean. It’s also the pair I named as the single most comfortable flat I own in my guide to the best shoes for Europe travel.
The founder, Maria, sticks to one overarching philosophy: to keep the craftsmanship of Sicilian born artisans alive and accessible to everyone. The Una flat carries that philosophy directly; it’s intentionally unstructured, built to skip the stiff break-in period, so it feels like it already belongs to you.
The nappa leather on these ballet flats is the softest I’ve felt at this price point, and it starts to mold to your foot within the first couple of wears rather than requiring weeks of painful breaking in. I’ve never seen a pair of ballet flats where the leather just bends to the touch. The unstructured silhouette means there’s no rigid heel digging into your Achilles, and the suede lining at the back of the heel is perfect if you’re prone to blisters.

I also love that the Una flats are an elongated, almost coffin-like shape, leaving ample room for your toes to breathe and not feel squished. There are also two rubber cross-over straps, which help keep the foot in place as this shoe is less structured/stiff.

Why We Love It:
- The nappa leather molds to your foot almost immediately, no painful break-in period
- Suede-lined heel back significantly cuts down on blister risk
- The lightweight sole has just enough cushion without feeling bulky or sneaker-like
Worth Noting:
- Some wearers find the insole on the thin side and note it doesn’t offer much dedicated arch support, so it may not be the best fit if you need structured support.
M. Gemi Una Flats are best for: anyone who wants their most-worn, everyday flat to also be their most comfortable.
2. Best Value Flats for Everyday: Madewell The Greta Mary Janes

Price: $98
Colors: Black, Brown, Suede Yellow, Blue Woven Suede, Light Umber Woven Suede, Burgundy Crinkle
Materials Used: 100% suede upper with an elastic Mary Jane strap and Madewell’s MWL Cloudlift Lite cushioned insole.
Available Widths: Medium
The Greta is Madewell’s best-selling flat for a reason, and the brown leather variant has become my ole reliable, year after year. I’ve worn these shoes almost to the ground. They’ve run errands with me, traveled across the world in my suitcase, and logged 10k+ steps on the days I know I’ll be out for hours. I can confidently say that these are some of the most comfortable ballet flats I own.
There are so many qualities about this shoe that make it the perfect ballet flat. First, the elastic strap on this style (rather than a rigid buckle) is what makes this shoe actually comfortable rather than just cute, since it flexes with your foot instead of cutting into your instep the way a lot of Mary Janes do.
The squared-off toe gives your toes actual room to move, which sounds like a small thing until you’ve spent a summer in pointed-toe flats! The buttery leather makes this shoe comfortable to wear all day long.
And finally, the Cloudlift Lite padding that Madewell uses is soft under your foot right out of the box, which means a very minimal break-in period required. At just $98, the Greta Mary Jane is one of the most accessible and compelling pairs on this list.

Why We Love It:
- The elastic strap flexes with your foot instead of digging in
- Squared-off toe box gives your toes real room, unlike a lot of Mary Janes
- Comfortable straight out of the box, no break-in period needed
Worth Noting:
- Some reviewers have said the Greta Mary Janes run slightly large, so it’s recommended to size down a half size… however: I’d only recommend sizing down if you have narrow feet. I have wider feet, and I took my TTS, which is a 9, and it fits perfect.
Best for: the most comfortable, wallet-friendly Mary Jane you’ll actually wear on repeat.
3. Best for Style and Comfort: Margaux Demi Jane Flat

Price Range: $325
Colors: Black, Natural raffia, Tan Shearling, Saddle Woven Leather, and Ecru Woven Leather
Materials Used: Soft nappa leather (also available in raffia and woven leather) with a flexible leather sole and plush foam padding.
Available Widths: Narrow, Medium, Wide
Margaux is the brand I recommend when someone tells me they want a flat that looks elevated but still feels like a slipper by the end of the day.
Handmade in Spain, the leather has a buttery quality that gets even softer with wear, and the plush foam padding under the foot is noticeably more cushioned than other similar flats I’ve tried. The squishy sole and soft leather make these a dream to walk in!
Let’s talk the Demi Jane in particular, which takes their bestselling silhouette (The Demi) and adds an adjustable instep strap with a signature buckle. This is a great option that helps with fit if you deal with any heel slippage in classic ballet flats.
What I love most about the Demi style, and Margaux shoes in general, is that their shoes come in various widths: narrow, medium, and wide. Their shoes are not one-size-fits-all, and they actually give you options to be able to choose the right shoe for you!

Margaux Demi Jane’s are the only round toe option on this list. Round toe shoes tend to be better suited for those with narrow feet, because the toe box can be tighter around the front.
One thing I will say about this style is that the round toe box has a lot more room than similar styles. As someone with wider feet, they do still feel quite comfortable for longer periods of time, and I can wear my Demi Jane’s for 6-8 hours without any discomfort.

Why We Love It:
- The adjustable buckle strap solves heel slippage without sacrificing the classic ballet flat silhouette
- Genuinely plush foam padding, more cushioned than most flats in this category
- Handmade in Spain with leather that gets even softer with wear
Worth Noting:
- Margaux’s sizing can be tricky, especially if you’ve never worn their shoes before. My rule of thumb is this: Make sure to choose your width size accurately, and stick with your normal TTS. I found the Demi Jane’s to be slightly fitted when I first put them on, but they loosened up after a few hours of wear. Remember that leather stretches way more than raffia!
Best for: the most elevated, photo-ready flat on this list that still feels incredibly comfortable.
4. Best Under $100: Madewell Greta Glove Flat

Price Range: $98
Colors: Black, and additional seasonal colorways depending on availability.
Materials Used: 100% smooth leather upper and lining, with an added arch cushion at the insole and a self-tied bow detail.
Available Widths: Medium, but I would say Madewell shoes generally tend to be great for people with wider feet as well.
Let’s talk about the Greta Mary Janes’ sister style, The Greta Glove Flat. This ballet flat is a quieter, more classic silhouette than the Greta, made from a supple leather that molds to the feet for a glove-like fit. This style has a soft square-toe, so it’s perfect for those wider feet gals. Similar to the Greta Mary Janes, they are also made from Cloudlift padding, which makes them the most comfortable ballet flats to wear all day long.
Quick note: The ballet flats I am wearing here are a slightly different (older) version of this style. In the new style, they removed the tie-bow on top and the inner trim around the leather.
It’s also worth noting that I’m onto my second pair of these ballet flats. Yes, I’ve purchased them twice, since I wore my first ones down after 3 years of wearing them consistently. That should say something about how comfortable these ballet flats are! For reference, I took my true to size in these (US 9), and they fit great. I don’t recommend sizing up.
And don’t even get me started on the price. For how high quality these shoes look, feel, and hold up, you’d think they’d be much more expensive than they really are.

Why We Love It:
- Genuine arch cushioning, which is rare to find at this price point
- Classic square-toe silhouette that reads more polished than a basic round-toe flat
- Leather sourced from an LWG-certified tannery
Worth Noting:
- These flats are an older Madewell style, which are no longer made. However, I have tried on the Greta Glove flats in person, and they’re basically the same as the ones I own!
Best for: a polished, comfortable everyday flat under $100.
5. Best for Travel/Packing in a Suitcase: Vivaia Makayla

Price Range: $149
Colors: Natural-Black, with additional colorways available depending on the season.
Materials Used: Breathable, raffia-inspired eco-knit upper made from recycled plastic bottles (RPET), with a moisture-wicking insole and an anti-slip rubber outsole.
Available Widths: Medium (Square-toe), enough room in the toe box – perfect for anyone with wide feet.
The Vivaia Makayla flat is the one shoe that lives in my carry-on for pretty much any warm weather trip I’m going on. It’s a staple I turn to alongside my other go-to shoes for Europe travel.
The first thing I noticed about this ballet flat was how soft and stretchy the knit upper part of this shoe is. I brought these on one of my recent trips to Europe to wear on my daily walks. I can tell you confidently that there’s zero break-in needed with these shoes. In fact, you could say I almost forgot I had any shoes on. And saying that after walking 15k+ steps in Europe is no joke. The other thing is that this style packs completely flat without losing its shape, which has saved me so much space on trips, and makes them a no brainer to pack!
On a more technical note, I love that the shoe has a moisture-wicking insole, which is a very useful detail for long travel days when your feet are on their feet (literally) for hours at a time. Bonus points is that the anti-slip outsole gives me the confidence to walk on those slippery cobblestone streets or marble hotel lobbies.

These comfortable ballet flats are also machine washable, which, you know that after a summer of European travel is not a small thing!
Why We Love It:
- Packs completely flat in a suitcase without losing its shape
- Zero break-in period thanks to the stretchy knit upper
- Machine washable, a lifesaver after a long trip
Worth Noting:
- The knit upper lacks the sleekness of leather, so it can come off as a little more casual or “sock-like” if you’re pairing them with dressier outfits.
Best for: the flat you throw in your suitcase without a second thought.
My Testing Process
I don’t believe in recommending a shoe I haven’t actually lived in, so every pair on this list has been worn by me, and tested thoroughly. What that looks like in practice: standing through long dinners, walking 10k+ steps on all types of streets, or running through back-to-back errands. Each time I tested I different shoe, I’d note how the material felt in the first few wears, whether there was any real cushioning underfoot, if the strap or heel back caused any blisters, and whether I’d reach for it again without thinking twice. If a pair didn’t pass that test, it didn’t make this list.
Why Trust C&C
I’ve been writing Croissants & Cafés since 2023, focused on mid-range European fashion, wardrobe curation, and long-standing pieces that earn their place in your closet, instead of just taking up more space.
I’ve bought (and returned) more ballet flats than I can count in pursuit of the ones that actually work and feel wonderful on your feet. Every recommendation here comes from my own closet and my own experiences.
Final Thoughts
Comfort in a ballet flat almost always comes down to three things: how the material behaves in the first few wears, whether there’s any real cushioning underfoot, and whether the strap or heel back is doing something to actually prevent blisters rather than just looking nice.
Every pair on this list checks at least two (if not, all) of those three boxes, and the M.Gemi Una checks all three, which is exactly why it’s my top overall pick. And, if you’re working on rounding out the rest of your wardrobe, my French capsule wardrobe guide is a great next stop.
If you’re building out more of your shoe rotation for the season, I’d love to know which of these you end up trying. Leave me a comment below and let me know!
