After owning Le Tanneur handbags for almost two years now, I have quite a few things to say. In this review, I’m sharing it all: the good, the bad, and what I wish I knew before choosing these bags. So keep reading for my honest opinions on this beloved Parisian handbag brand!
If there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I’m a sucker for good leather handbags. Especially when it comes to handbags that possess the luxury look and feel of high-end designers, yet don’t break the bank.
Over the years, I’ve invested in various designers, and my handbag collection consists of all different shapes, sizes, textures, and price points.
Recently, I had the pleasure of adding a Le Tanneur bag to my collection, and let me tell you—I was pleasantly surprised by the top-tier quality of these bags, and the more-than-fair price point.
Le Tanneur is one of those brands that just gets it right. Everything from the design to the structure, packaging, delivery, and the experience of receiving one of their bags…it’s a luxury experience from beginning to end.
*UPDATE*: This article has been updated on April 27th, 2026 to reflect my honest opinions after 1.5 years of owning bags from this brand.

About Le Tanneur: A Brief Brand History
If you’re unfamiliar with the brand, Le Tanneur has been crafting high-quality leather goods since 1898, earning a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, timeless designs, and a strong commitment to quality.
While they don’t (yet) have the same widespread recognition as Polène, Longchamp, or Céline, it stands out as one of France’s hidden gems in the world of luxury leather. And, this French leather handbag brand is French it-girl approved. So, if you’re looking for an authentically Parisian brand to invest in, Le Tanneur is a great choice.
When it comes to their designs, all of their handbags are elegant and functional, making them an excellent choice for those who appreciate understated luxury without paying a four-figure price tag!

First Impressions: Unboxing & Quality
The Emilie Bag
When deciding on what bag to choose, there were so many options and I swear I was faced with option-paralysis! I ultimately ended up deciding on the Medium Emilie Handbag With Double Flap in T-Signature Leather (color, black) because I had been looking to add a classic black bag to my collection, and this one just seemed perfect.

From the moment I unboxed this beauty, I was instantly impressed. The leather is soft yet structured, with a beautiful matte finish that exudes quiet luxury elegance.
I think it’s also worth mentioning that I have my eye on this gorgeous metal shoulder strap, another incredible piece by Le Tanneur! I have so many ideas for how I’d style this piece with my Medium Emilie.
One of the things I appreciate is that Le Tanneur bags don’t have that ‘over-the-top branding’ you see on so many designer handbags, which makes it feel even more elevated and sophisticated. I love that the branding is subtle and chic—with the two gold ‘T’s’ acting as the bags’ buckles. There is also some small & very faint branding on the bottom of the bag, and I find the placement to be very elegant.
The packaging itself was beautiful. The bag came in a gorgeous royal blue dust bag, which actually matches the inner lining of their bags! I love when brands add a thoughtful touch like this.
Design, Functionality & Features
After almost two years of wearing this bag 2-3 times a week, I can confidently say this Le Tanneur bag has exceeded my expectations in terms of design and functionality.
The cowhide leather retains its structure and durability, and it honestly looks exactly like how it did when I first opened it. There is little to no wear and tear so far, and I do not foresee any issues with the leather or quality in the near future.
The gold-tone hardware on the bag is solid and weighty, something that instantly elevates its premium feel, comparable to brands like Saint Laurent or Polène!!
One thing in particular I LOVE about this bag is the open outer pocket on the back of this bag, which acts as the perfect slot to put your phone or card wallet into. This has been such a convenient feature for me.

In terms of comfort, the bag does come with a cross-body adjustable strap, which I’ve only used once or twice. To be honest, I really prefer the handheld look, as I feel it exudes more elegance that way.
Pros vs Cons of the Emilie bag
As much as I love this bag, I do have one gripe with it. The way the flap “clicks into place” is not as secure as I would like it to be.
To explain this in the best way I can, envision that the front flap has a latch connected to it, that needs to click into place on the body of the bag. The issue is, when you click it into place, it comes out very easily if you gently push down on the bag. I found this to be less of an issue earlier on, but as the bag went through more wear, I notice this significantly impacts my experience with the bag.
I wish I could say this issue was unique to me, but I think it’s just the nature of this bag and the way the clasp/closure is structure. If you feel this might bother you too, I’d opt for a similar style, the Emie, which comes in a beautiful Nubuck leather and multiple colors.
My Experience Wearing It Out: Oh my Compliments!
I can’t tell you how many compliments I’ve received on the Emilie bag.
Recently, I was doing a little shopping at J.McLaughlin, chatting with the sales associate, when she eyed my bag and said:
“I know a good quality bag when I see one. My daughter used to work for Celine. Your bag is gorgeous!”
That moment solidified everything I already felt—this bag is a showstopper. Whether I’m out running errands or at dinner, people always ask where it’s from.
The Elena Bag
Recently, I had the pleasure of adding the Elena bag to my collection, which I’ve had my eye on for over a year now. I opted for this bag in the black grained leather, as I plan to use this as a work/office tote and wanted something a bit more muted. Incidentally, I now own two black bags from this brand, albeit in two different leather types.

What initially drew me to this bag was the shape and unique silhouette. I find this bag to be so aesthetically appealing to the eye, and love the minimalistic nature of it.
There are no heavy logos, and the branding is inconspicuous—just a tiny embossed hot stamp on the bottom right corner. If you know anything about me, you know I love an ‘if you know, you know’ moment, and that’s exactly the energy these bags give me.
Now, the Elena bag comes in three different sizes: the small, medium, and large. The small and large styles are exactly the same silhouette, but the medium has a slightly different structure, with a fold-over flap.
I’m going to be honest with you: I had a tough time choosing between the M and L, but ultimately opted for the large as I had this specific style on my wishlist for more than a year, and knew I wanted to use this as an office tote, so space for a laptop was a non-negotiable for me.
Design, Functionality & Features
I’ve only had this bag in my possession for a little over two months, but I can confidently say that the quality and structure of this bag is top notch. I had a feeling it would be, as Le Tanneur’s quality consistently delivers.
Unlike the Emilie bag I have which is cowhide leather, I got the Elena bag in a beautiful grained leather. Personally, I prefer the grained leather over the cowhide. It’s a much smoother texture, and doesn’t scratch easily compared to the cowhide.
Now, let’s talk about the design and details. In addition to its appealing exterior, the Elena bag really comes alive with its interior. You can tell this bag was just crafted with so much love and thoughtfulness. The bag’s suede-lined interior comes with a detachable pouch (great for makeup & small toiletries), plus dedicated pockets for lipstick, a card case, and your phone. It also comes with a built-in metal charm with Le Tanneur’s logo on it.

Pros vs Cons of the Elena bag
One thing I LOVE about the Elena bag is how easily I can wear it over my shoulder. The straps are long and comfortable enough to wear on your shoulder all day. I’ve had no issues or pain carrying it to and from work in the NYC.
I’m happy to say I haven’t experienced any cons with this bag yet. The one thing I will say, though, which may bother some people is that there is no top zipper closure. There is just one small magnetic closure at the top of the bag, so if you’re looking for something a little more secure, this may not be the one.
However, the pros definitely outweigh any cons of this bag, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good office bag.
How to Style a Le Tanneur Bag
One of the best things about my Le Tanneur Emilie bag is how effortlessly versatile it is. Whether I’m dressing up or keeping things casual, it always adds that perfect finishing touch.
For a work-friendly outfit, I pair it with wide-leg trousers, a basic neutral colored top, a statement belt, and ballet flats or my vivaia booties. If I’m heading out for coffee or drinks with a friend, I love wearing my bag with a fitted dress and trench coat over it, letting the bag add a polished touch!

For a chic everyday look, it’s perfect with a pair of loose, linen pants, an oversized flowy top, and classic flats. The structured design of the bag gives off a polished, put-together vibe without feeling overly formal.

No matter the occasion, this bag feels effortless, timeless, and incredibly easy to style, which is exactly what I want from a luxury handbag.
Price & Value: Is Le Tanneur Worth It?
Okay, now let’s talk about what really matters — are Le Tanneur bags worth the price?
Le Tanneur bags range between $450 – $790, making them around the same price as Polène ($450 – $750) but leagues below Celine or Saint Laurent ($2,000+). Given the craftsmanship, full-grain and cowhide leather, and overall experience, it feels like a steal in comparison.
When it comes to durability, I’ve been using their bag consistently for almost two years, and they still look as good as when I first got them. The leather hasn’t lost its shape, which is something I always pay close attention to when investing in a new handbag.
I can confidently say that this is a bag built to last.

Would I repurchase? Without a doubt. If you’re still debating whether or not to buy a Le Tanneur bag, go for it. You won’t regret it and it will be a closet staple for years to come.
