Two years on a wishlist. One unboxing. And the immediate feeling that it was completely worth the wait.
Owning a Gerard Darel bag has been in the back of my mind for the better half of two years. I’ve visited the boutique in SoHo, tried on all my favorite styles, and could even tell you which bag and size would be perfect for you based on your lifestyle.
I’ve mentioned them in my mid-range European bag roundup, and have quietly followed their collection ever since. The style that called out to me the most was the 24H, which is the bag that put this brand on the map. So, when the opportunity to collaborate with Gerard Darel came through, it was a major pinch me moment.
The brand kindly let me select a bag from their 2026 collection, and I ultimately decided on the 24H bag Braided effect suede in Ambre. The moment I unboxed it, I knew it was the right choice. After receiving the bag, I couldn’t be happier with my choice.
This is my full review of the Gerard Darel 24H bag, including first impressions, design details, what fits inside, and the pros and cons of this bag! Plus, a look at the rest of the brand’s most notable styles. Let’s get into it.

About Gerard Darel
Gerard Darel is a French fashion house founded in Paris in 1971 by Danièle and Gérard Darel. This iconic husband and wife duo built a brand that looked just like them: elegant, timeless, and effortlessly Parisian. They opened their first boutique in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in 1987, and those same pillars have carried through everything they have made since.
The first major success of this fashion house was their 24H bag, which launched in 2003 and became an instant icon among fashion lovers. The name, 24H, says it all; it’s a bag that’s designed to take you through an entire day, from morning to night seamlessly. It takes 30 individual pieces of leather to construct a single bag, which tells you the level of craftsmanship behind it.
What I love most about this brand is that the silhouette is completely unique to them. When you see a Gerard Darel bag, you know it.
The 24H Bag in Camel Cross Hatch Suede
First Impressions & Quality
I had been eyeing the Gerard Darel 24H for two years before this moment, so receiving it was such a pinch me moment. There were so many beautiful textures and colors to choose from, everything from smooth to bubble leather, crinkled leather, braided leather, and braided suede.
I ultimately decided on the 24H bag Braided effect suede in Ambre, and completely fell head over heels for this piece. It was not the bag I had originally imagined myself in, but when I saw it on their site, I knew I had to have it.
The warmth of the Ambre color, the cross hatch texture pressed into the suede, the gold hardware, and the way this whole bag looked so rich is what drew me in.

The bag arrived in a beautiful off-white dust bag with the branding ‘GERARD DAREL’ printed on the center in all caps.
One of the first things I noticed upon unboxing is that the suede quality was exceptional. There was absolutely no factory smell, and the leather felt thick and substantial without feeling heavy. I adore how the cross hatch weave pattern is pressed into the surface of this bag — it just looks so elevated and expensive.
Design, Functionality & Features
The Silhouette
The Gerard Darel 24H has one of the most distinctive silhouettes in the mid-range handbag world. I would even say it’s the most defining characteristic of this brand.
It is a hobo-barrel hybrid, structured enough to hold its shape when full, but with a beautiful natural slouch that makes it feel relaxed and perfect for everyday.
One detail I really love is how the sides gather into suede ruffle drawstrings that are finished with small gold ball ends. The whole bag is feminine without being too delicate, which I love because it makes Gerard Darel bags feel low maintenance!

The Hardware
The gold hardware on this bag is subtle but perfectly placed. The buckles sit at the top of each strap, and the gold ball ends on the drawstrings just tie the whole bag together. Because I wear almost exclusively gold jewelry, everything coordinates effortlessly and the camel suede and warm gold seamlessly blend together.

The Strap & Everyday Wear
One of the things I love most about this bag is how beautifully and comfortably the straps sit on the shoulder. They are thick enough so they do not dig into your shoulders, which is really important when you are carrying it around all day.
For someone who is always on the go, the ability to just throw this over your shoulder and leave is everything. It is a bag you do not have to think twice about, and that ease is a big part of what makes the 24H so enduring and popular.
What Fits Inside the Gerard Darel 24H bag
After using this bag for a little under a month, I can confidently say that the 24H fully lives up to its name. I was so surprised at how much actually fits inside this bag! I was able to pack all of my daily essentials comfortably, plus a little extra.
Below, you can see everything I was able to fit in my Gerard Darel 24H bag. It comfortably fits an iPad, full-size book, sunglasses, reading glasses, wallet, MagSafe charger, AirPods, granola bar, and a cardigan with room to spare.
The interior is one large open compartment with a zip pocket, which means it functions like a proper carryall while still looking polished from the outside.

This is definitely one of the most spacious mid-range bags I own, and the fact that it carries this much while still looking chic on the shoulder is my favorite part about this bag.
Pros & Cons of the 24H bag
What I love:
- The slouchy barrel silhouette is so unique and instantly recognizable
- The Ambre Cross Hatch Suede pairs easily with anything in your wardrobe
- The gold ball-end drawstring details are a beautiful, considered touch
- Incredibly roomy for a bag that looks this chic
- Sits comfortably on the shoulder and under the arm
Worth knowing before you buy:
- Suede requires more care than smooth leather, so I’d recommend a protector spray before your first wear
- There’s one large open compartment inside, so a small pouch insert may help if you like organization
- The bag holds its shape best when full, so stuff the bottom with a scarf or jacket if carrying light
Styling Notes
*Before I get into the outfits, there’s one thing worth knowing: the 24H holds its shape best when it’s full. When the bag arrived stuffed with tissue paper, the barrel silhouette was beautifully defined. Once you remove it, the bag settles into a softer, more relaxed slouch. If you prefer the fuller look, just make sure you’re carrying enough inside to fill it out. A light sweater or jacket tucked in works perfectly.
The 24H Braided effect suede (especially in the color Ambre) works beautifully as a neutral and goes with anything in your wardrobe. The warmth of the amber/camel color looks so effortless with white, cream, beige, black, and every shade of brown. It even looks great with denim!
I have been reaching for it most with a simple white top and black wide-leg jeans, which allows the bag to be the focal point of the outfit.

As much as I love wearing it on my shoulder, I also love that I have the option to wear it handheld. Sometimes, you just want a chic bag moment where you can flaunt your newest addition! Ladies, trust me, I get it.
Wearing the Gerard Darel 24H handheld gives it a more polished, intentional feel that works beautifully for brunch, shopping, or anywhere you want the bag to feel like it’s part of the outfit.

Other Gérard Darel Styles Worth Knowing
The 24H is the iconic center piece of the Gérard Darel collection, but it is not the only style worth knowing about. Gerard Darel makes some beautiful variations of this bag, including in smaller sizes!
Here are the two I currently have my eye on:
The 18H – Think of the 18H is the slightly smaller sibling of the 24H. It has the same DNA, same slouchy barrel silhouette, and same beautiful hardware… just scaled down. It’s a great option if you love the 24H aesthetic but want something a little more compact for days when you are not carrying quite as much.
The Mini with Chain Strap – This bag definitely leans more evening. The chain strap gives it an elevated, dressed-up quality that the 24H and 18H do not have. It is also much smaller than the other two! I love this one because I feel like this bag is the accessory of an outfit. I would reach for this one for dinner, events, or any occasion where you want the to be the talking piece.
Price & Value: Is Gerard Darel Worth It?
Gerard Darel bags sit in the $300–$565 range for the 24H and its variations, which puts them toward the lower/middle end of the mid-range European bag spectrum. For a bag that is handcrafted in France, requires 30 individual pieces of leather in its construction, and carries this much, all while looking chic — the value is exceptional.
What I love about this brand, is that they position themselves as premium and accessible, with a strong emphasis on timeless style rather than seasonal trends. That positioning shows across all of their bags, and especially in the 24H. It has not changed significantly in style since 2003 because it does not need to. It is a bag that was designed correctly the first time.

Who Is Gerard Darel For?
Gerard Darel is a strong fit if you:
- Want a bag with a completely distinctive silhouette that is instantly recognizable without logos
- Need a genuinely roomy everyday bag that looks as good as it functions
- Are drawn to slouchy, shoulder-friendly styles you can throw on and go
You might want to look elsewhere if:
- You prefer very structured, rigid bag shapes with a defined exterior
- You need multiple interior pockets and compartments for organization
- Suede care feels like too much maintenance. If so, the smooth leather versions of the 24H are the perfect alternative!
